You can get a student loan in India from any public bank, private bank or NBFC. Loans up to ₹7.5 lakh can be collateral-free. Students admitted to eligible top institutions can use the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal for a collateral-free, guarantor-free loan with a 75% government guarantee, plus a 3% interest subvention if family income is up to ₹8 lakh. Interest is tax-deductible for up to 8 years under Section 80E.
What Is a Student Loan in India and How Does It Work?
A student loan (education loan) is money a bank lends to cover tuition, hostel, exam fees, books, laptop and travel for a course in India or abroad. The bank usually pays the college directly. You start repaying after a moratorium, typically the course length plus 6 to 12 months.
The main decisions are: which lender, whether you need collateral, and whether you can claim government interest support. This guide answers each one, with figures taken from official documents rather than aggregator estimates.
Education loan vs scholarship: A scholarship is free money. A loan must be repaid with interest. If you qualify for a scholarship, apply for it first. See all Gujarat scholarship schemes.

PM-Vidyalaxmi: Collateral-Free Student Loan Explained
PM-Vidyalaxmi is a Central Sector scheme approved by the Union Cabinet on November 6, 2024, with an outlay of ₹3,600 crore up to 2030-31. It offers collateral-free, guarantor-free loans to students admitted to Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs), listed on the portal. It applies to study in India only.
Interest Subvention by Family Income
| Annual family income | Technical / professional courses | Other courses |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹4.5 lakh | 100% subvention (PM-USP CSIS) | 3% subvention |
| ₹4.5 – ₹8 lakh | 3% subvention | 3% subvention |
| Above ₹8 lakh | Collateral-free loan and guarantee only; no interest subvention | |
- Subvention applies during the moratorium period only, on principal up to ₹10 lakh.
- From year two, release is linked to academic performance reported by your institution.
- Money reaches the loan account via e-voucher or CBDC wallet after banks claim it.
- The 3% benefit has an annual cap, so apply early.
No double benefits. Students receiving another central or state scholarship, interest subvention scheme or fee reimbursement are not eligible for PM-Vidyalaxmi benefits. Check this before choosing between a scholarship and a loan.
Student Loan Eligibility in India
There is no minimum age. Banks assess your academic record, the institution's ranking and your co-applicant's income. For PM-Vidyalaxmi, your institution must be on the portal's QHEI list.

Education Loan Interest Rates in India: What to Compare
Rates change often and differ by bank, course, loan amount and profile, so we do not publish a single figure. Public sector banks are generally cheaper than NBFCs. Compare these terms in writing before you sign:
| Term | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Interest rate type | Floating or fixed? Linked to which benchmark, and what spread? |
| Processing fee | Many public banks waive it for smaller loans. |
| Moratorium | Course duration plus 6 or 12 months? Is interest simple during this period? |
| Prepayment charges | Education loans usually carry none. Confirm in writing. |
| Repayment tenure | Longer tenure lowers EMI but raises total interest. |
| Insurance | Is a mandatory life or loan cover being added to your cost? |
Tip: Paying simple interest during your course reduces the balance that compounds later. Even small monthly payments help.
Section 80E: Tax Benefit on Student Loans
- You can deduct the full interest paid on an education loan, with no upper limit.
- The deduction runs for up to 8 years from when repayment starts, or until the interest is repaid, whichever is earlier.
- Only interest qualifies, not principal.
- The loan must be from a bank, financial institution or approved charitable institution, for you, your spouse, your children or a person you are guardian of.
Tax rules change with each Budget and depend on the tax regime you choose. Confirm current rules with a chartered accountant or the Income Tax Department.

Common Mistakes That Get Student Loans Rejected
- ✗Applying after fee deadlines. Sanction can take weeks. Start as soon as you get an offer.
- ✗Name or date-of-birth mismatch. Aadhaar, PAN, marksheets and admission letter must match exactly.
- ✗Ignoring the scheme list. PM-Vidyalaxmi covers only listed institutions. Check yours first.
- ✗Taking a scholarship and expecting subvention. Overlapping benefits are not allowed.
- ✗Borrowing more than needed. Borrow for fees and essentials, not lifestyle costs.
- ✗Using agents who charge for "guaranteed approval". Official portals are free to apply. Never pay anyone to secure a loan.
