In Depth
Digital Gujarat Scholarship is the Government of Gujarat's centralised, digital scholarship delivery platform available at digitalgujarat.gov.in. Launched to bring transparency and accessibility to state scholarship programmes, the portal consolidates more than 33 individual schemes administered by multiple departments | including the Social Welfare Department, Tribal Development Department, and the Directorate of Technical Education | into one unified online system.
Before the Digital Gujarat portal, students had to visit government offices in person to apply, track, and receive scholarships. Payments were delayed, paperwork was lost, and middlemen often extracted fees. The portal eliminated these barriers: today, a student in rural Kutch can apply for the same scholarship as a student in Ahmedabad, from their phone, free of charge, in under 30 minutes.
The scholarships are designed primarily for students from reserved and backward categories | SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), OBC (Other Backward Class), SEBC (Socially and Educationally Backward Class), EWS (Economically Weaker Section), and NTDNT (Nomadic Tribes, De-notified Tribes, and NT). Additionally, students from Minority communities (Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain) and even General category students with merit (particularly through the MYSY scheme) are covered.
The core eligibility requirements common to most schemes are: permanent residency in Gujarat (with a valid domicile certificate), enrollment in a recognised educational institution, family annual income within the scheme-specific limit, and a minimum academic score in the previous examination. Gujarat residency is the non-negotiable baseline | students from other states studying in Gujarat are not eligible.
The scholarship amount varies dramatically by scheme. The most modest awards | around ₹940 to ₹3,000 per year | go to pre-matric students (Std 1–10) under SC/ST schemes. The largest awards go to students under Dr. Ambedkar Post-Matric Scholarship (SC) and the MYSY Scholarship, both of which can cover up to ₹2,00,000 per year. For PhD scholars, the Research Scholarship provides ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 per month.
Beyond tuition fee coverage, many schemes also include maintenance allowance (monthly living costs), study material allowance, and in some cases hostel charges. The MYSY scheme notably includes a one-time equipment allowance of ₹10,000 for tools, calculators, or laptops required for technical courses.
All scholarship payments under the Digital Gujarat portal are made via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). This means the scholarship amount is wired directly to the student's bank account without any intermediary. To receive payments, students must ensure their Aadhaar card is linked (seeded) to their bank account and that the NPCI has confirmed the linkage. Students can check payment status at pfms.nic.in.
A common issue students face is Aadhaar-bank seeding failure | the bank account exists but the Aadhaar link hasn't been confirmed by NPCI. This causes payment delays even when the scholarship is approved. The solution is to visit your bank branch and request Aadhaar-NPCI seeding status confirmation, or use your bank's net banking portal to do it digitally.
The Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavalamban Yojana (MYSY) is the most well-known and generous scholarship under the Digital Gujarat umbrella. Unlike category-based schemes, MYSY is open to students of all categories who achieved 80% or above in Class 10 or 12 (or 65% in a Diploma programme) and are pursuing Diploma or Degree education. The family income ceiling is ₹6 lakh per year.
MYSY covers full annual tuition fees up to ₹2,00,000 plus a ₹10,000 equipment allowance. It is arguably the most impactful scholarship for merit students from lower-middle-income families in Gujarat, enabling them to pursue engineering, medicine, law, and professional degree programmes without financial burden.
Most Digital Gujarat scholarship schemes are not automatically renewed each year. Students receiving a scholarship in AY 2025–26 must reapply (renew) for AY 2026–27 within the application window. Renewal applications require updated documents | specifically the current year's admission receipt, updated marksheet (to confirm you passed), and renewed income certificate if the previous one has expired.
A Freeship Card is issued by the competent government authority to eligible scholarship recipients upon approval of their application. It entitles the student to gain admission to an educational institution without paying tuition or hostel fees upfront. The institution receives payment directly from the government through the scholarship disbursement process. The Freeship Card is particularly important for students from SC, ST, and other reserved categories pursuing professional courses, as it prevents them from being denied admission due to inability to pay fees before scholarship disbursal.
Gujarat students sometimes confuse the state Digital Gujarat portal with the central government's National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in. The key difference: NSP hosts central government scholarships (like the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, Central Sector Scholarship, and post-matric scholarships from the Ministry of Social Justice), while Digital Gujarat hosts state government scholarships funded by the Gujarat government. Some schemes | particularly central post-matric scholarships for SC/ST | are accessible through both portals, but Gujarat-specific schemes like MYSY, NTDNT, and SEBC scholarships are only available on digitalgujarat.gov.in.
