What Is This Scholarship
The Post Matric Scholarship for ST students in Gujarat is a centrally sponsored scheme. It runs under the Umbrella Scheme for Education of Scheduled Tribe Students, launched by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Gujarat implements it through the Tribal Development Department.
The scheme has been running since 1989. Its goal is simple | remove the money barrier that stops tribal students from continuing education after Class 10. When a family earns little and fees are high, this scholarship steps in to cover them fully.
Funding is shared between the Central Government and the State Government. The Centre contributes 75% and Gujarat contributes the remaining 25%. This co-funding model has made the scheme one of the most financially stable scholarship programs in the state.
The Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat oversees implementation. The Commissionerate of Tribal Development (CoTD) monitors disbursement and district-level execution.
This is different from MYSY or other state merit scholarships. The post-matric ST scholarship does not require a minimum percentage. It focuses entirely on income and tribe status. If your family earns within the limit and you belong to a notified Scheduled Tribe, you are eligible regardless of marks.
Over 2,00,000 ST students in Gujarat received this benefit in 2019-20 alone. The numbers have grown since then, as digital verification and DBT transfers have made the process faster.
Eligibility Criteria
There are four things that decide whether you qualify.
1. Tribe Certificate
You must belong to a community notified as Scheduled Tribe in Gujarat. Your ST certificate must be issued by a competent authority | usually the Mamlatdar or Collector. The Tribal Development Department now requires a digital caste certificate with QR code or barcode for automated verification. Older manual certificates may cause delays or rejection.
2. Family Income Limit
The annual family income must be ₹2,50,000 or less. This applies to the main Central scheme (Umbrella Scheme / VKY-157). The income certificate must come from the Mamlatdar office of your district. A certificate from any other authority will not be accepted.
3. Domicile
You must be a permanent resident of Gujarat. A domicile certificate issued by the Revenue Department proves this. Students studying outside Gujarat but originally from Gujarat should check with their district Tribal Development Officer for guidance.
4. Course and Institution
You must be enrolled as a regular student in a government-recognized institution. The course must be post-matric | meaning Class 11, Class 12, diploma, degree, postgraduate, or doctoral level. Distance education and correspondence courses are usually not covered.
BCK Codes and Scheme Identifiers
Gujarat's Digital Portal uses alphanumeric codes to identify each scholarship scheme. Knowing your correct code helps you find the right form and prevents wrong applications.
For ST students, the main schemes fall under the VKY series (Vanchit Vargona Kalyan Yojana). Here is what each code covers.
| Scheme Code | Scheme Name | Who It Is For | Funding Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umbrella Scheme (Central) | Umbrella Scheme for Education of ST Students | Post-Matric | All ST students with income ≤ ₹2.5 lakh | GoI 75% + Gujarat 25% |
| VKY-156 | Post Matric Scholarship for ST Girls | Income above ₹2.5 lakh | ST girl students only, income above ₹2.5 lakh | State Government |
| VKY-157 | Food Bill Assistance in College Attached Hostels | ST students living in college-attached government hostels | State Government |
| VKY-158 | Swami Vivekanand Stipend | ITI Courses | ST students in ITI and diploma technical courses | State Government |
| VKY-164 | Instrumental Assistance for First Year Students | First-year ST students in Medical, Engineering, Diploma | State Government |
For most ST students, the Umbrella Scheme (Central) is the primary application. VKY-157 is an add-on if you live in a hostel. VKY-156 is a separate application for ST girls whose income is above the central scheme's threshold.
Benefits | Fees, Maintenance, and Hostel
The post matric ST scholarship covers three main types of expenses. Each is calculated differently depending on your course group and whether you live in a hostel.
Tuition Fee and Exam Fee
The scheme covers 100% of the tuition fee and examination fee that the institution charges compulsorily. This is not a reimbursement in all cases | the Freeship Card route allows institutions to claim fees directly from the government, so you never have to pay first and wait for a refund.
Maintenance Allowance
A monthly maintenance allowance is paid to cover stationery, travel, and daily study needs. The rate depends on your course group (Group I to IV) and whether you are a day scholar or a hosteller. Hostellers receive a higher amount.
Hostel Food Bill Assistance (VKY-157)
ST students living in government-recognized college-attached hostels can receive food bill assistance of ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per month. This is separate from the main maintenance allowance and is claimed under VKY-157. When you apply on Digital Gujarat, check the Hosteller box and upload your hostel allotment certificate to activate this benefit.
Instrumental Assistance (VKY-164)
First-year ST students admitted to Medical, Engineering, or Diploma programmes can apply for instrument and equipment assistance under VKY-164. This covers the cost of tools, kits, or lab instruments required at the start of the course.
Course Groups and Allowance Rates
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs divides courses into four groups. Your monthly maintenance allowance is tied to your group. Here are the standard rates.
| Group | Course Examples | Day Scholar (per month) | Hosteller (per month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group I | Degree and PG in Medicine, Engineering, Law, Management, CA, Agriculture | ₹550 | ₹1,200 |
| Group II | Other professional courses not in Group I, Polytechnic diplomas | ₹530 | ₹820 |
| Group III | Graduation and PG courses (BA, BSc, BCom, MA, MSc) not in Group I or II | ₹300 | ₹570 |
| Group IV | All post-Class X level non-degree courses | Class 11, Class 12, ITI | ₹230 | ₹380 |
Hostellers always receive more. If you move from day scholar to hosteller mid-year, inform your institution immediately and update your application on the portal. Payment comes via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
VKY-156 | ST Girls Above ₹2.5 Lakh Income
If you are an ST girl student and your family income is above ₹2,50,000, you do not qualify for the Central Umbrella Scheme. But the Gujarat government created VKY-156 so no ST girl misses out on support.
VKY-156 is a state-funded scheme. It covers ST girl students whose family income is slightly above the Central scheme threshold. Boys above ₹2.5 lakh are not covered under any current post-matric scheme in this category.
The application portal, document list, and DBT payment process for VKY-156 are the same as the main Umbrella Scheme. You apply at digitalgujarat.gov.in → Scholarship Services → ST → VKY-156.
Benefit amounts and the exact upper income threshold for VKY-156 are notified each academic year. Always check the current-year notification before applying, as these figures can change.
VKY-157 | Food Bill Assistance for Hostellers
VKY-157 is specifically for ST students who live in government-recognized hostels attached to their college. It provides financial help with mess and food expenses.
The assistance under VKY-157 is typically ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per month. This covers roughly 80% of average mess charges at Gujarat government hostels.
To claim this benefit, you need to tick the Hosteller option during your Digital Gujarat application and upload a valid hostel allotment certificate. The certificate must come from the hostel warden or the college administration.
VKY-157 is an add-on to the main scholarship, not a standalone scheme. You apply for it as part of your ST post-matric scholarship application. Both benefits are released as separate transactions via DBT.
Documents You Need
Prepare all documents before you start your application. Incomplete uploads are the most common reason for rejection. All files must be in PDF or JPG format and must be below 200 KB each.
Older manual ST certificates without QR codes frequently cause delays. Get a fresh digital certificate from your Mamlatdar office before applying. Renewal applicants must also ensure the caste certificate has not expired.
How to Apply on Digital Gujarat
All applications go through the official Digital Gujarat portal. There is no offline form. The process is the same for fresh applicants and renewals, though renewals require fewer documents.
Track your application at digitalgujarat.gov.in → Scholarship Services using your reference number and Aadhaar. For Digital Gujarat helpdesk support, call 1800-233-5500 (toll-free).
Important Dates 2026
The portal window for AY 2025-26 reopened from 9 March 2026 to 31 March 2026 for ST students. For AY 2026-27, the fresh application window typically opens in August 2026. The standard deadline is 31 October 2026.
| Event | Typical Window | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Portal opens for fresh applications | August 2026 | After college admissions settle |
| Last date for fresh applications | 31 October 2026 | Subject to official notification |
| Institute-level verification deadline | 15 November 2026 | Follow up with your college |
| District-level forwarding deadline | 30 November 2026 | Mamlatdar or DTDO forwards to state |
| DBT payment release | January–March 2027 | Check bank statement regularly |
Common Mistakes That Cause Rejection
Each year, thousands of applications are rejected for avoidable reasons. Here are the most frequent errors and how to avoid them.
Bank Account Not Aadhaar-Seeded
DBT payments only go to accounts linked with Aadhaar. If your account is inactive or not seeded, the payment fails and the scholarship is withheld. Visit your bank and get Aadhaar seeding done before you apply.
Old or Invalid Caste Certificate
Manual certificates without QR codes are rejected during automated verification. Get a fresh digital certificate from your Mamlatdar office. This is the single biggest cause of rejection in recent years.
Income Certificate Not from Mamlatdar
Income certificates issued by other authorities (sarpanch, gazetted officer, employer) are not accepted. Only a Mamlatdar-issued income certificate works for ST post-matric scholarship.
Applying for Two Scholarships
You can only hold one active scholarship at a time. Applying for both the Umbrella Scheme and MYSY (or any other scheme) triggers a duplication alert and cancels both applications. Choose one and stick with it. For most ST students, the post-matric scheme is the better choice because it covers 100% of tuition.
Missing Hosteller Box
If you live in a government hostel but do not mark the Hosteller box, you lose the VKY-157 food bill benefit. You cannot fix this after final submission. Always double-check this field.
Institute Does Not Verify On Time
Even a perfect application fails if your college does not verify and forward it before the deadline. Speak to your college's scholarship coordinator immediately after submitting. Keep following up weekly until you see the status update on the portal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the income limit for post matric ST scholarship in Gujarat?
The annual family income must not exceed ₹2,50,000 for the Central Umbrella Scheme. The income certificate must be issued by your district Mamlatdar. This limit applies to total family income, not just the student's or father's income.
Can a student in a private college apply?
Yes, but with conditions. Students in government or grant-in-aid colleges are covered by both the Central and state-funded versions. Students in private unaided colleges can apply under the Central scheme if their income is within ₹2.5 lakh and the institution is government-recognized.
Is there a minimum percentage to apply?
No. The post-matric scholarship for ST students has no minimum marks requirement. It is purely income-based. This sets it apart from MYSY, which requires specific merit cutoffs.
What happens if I fail one year?
If you fail in the first attempt, you can still receive exam fees and maintenance allowance for the repeated year. If you fail the same year twice, you lose the allowance for that class until you pass. Once you progress to the next class, eligibility resumes.
How does the Freeship Card work?
Under the Freeship Card route, you do not pay fees at admission. You apply for the Freeship Card on Digital Gujarat after getting admission. The government sends the fee directly to your institution. This avoids the need to arrange money upfront and wait for reimbursement.
Can I apply for MYSY and this scholarship together?
No. You can only hold one active scholarship at a time. Duplicate applications across schemes lead to automatic cancellation. For most ST students, the post-matric tribal scholarship is the better option because it covers 100% of tuition regardless of marks.
What is the difference between VKY-156 and the Umbrella Scheme?
The Umbrella Scheme is the main Central Government scholarship for ST students with income up to ₹2.5 lakh. VKY-156 is a separate state scheme for ST girl students whose income is above that limit. Boys above ₹2.5 lakh are not covered under either scheme.
When does the money reach my bank account?
After institute verification and district approval, the amount is transferred via DBT directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account. This typically happens between January and March following the application year. Track your status on the Digital Gujarat portal using your reference number.
